ONS Construction Output: April 2024
Let’s talk about what’s been happening in the construction world recently. In February 2024, there was a drop in how much construction work was done compared to January. It’s important to understand why this happened and what it means for the industry.
Monthly Output Overview
In February, the amount of construction work went down by 1.9%, even though it had gone up by 1.1% in January. Despite this drop, the total value of construction work for February was still pretty high at £15,229 million.
Reasons Behind the Drop
So, why did construction work decrease in February? Well, it’s mainly because fewer new projects and less maintenance work were happening. People surveyed said that heavy rain caused delays in planned construction projects, which led to less work getting done overall.
Looking at Different Parts of Construction
When we look at specific areas within construction, we see that most of them saw a decrease in February. Things like fixing non-housing buildings and building new commercial spaces went down by 2.5% and 4.0%, respectively. The only area that saw a small increase was fixing up private houses, which went up by just 0.2%.
How Things Changed Over Three Months
Taking a step back and looking at the three months leading up to February 2024, we see that construction work went down by 1.0% overall. This was mainly because fewer new projects were happening, although maintenance work went up a bit during this time.
