A Guide to A-level, BTec Level 3 and T-level Results Day 2023

The moment you’re all eagerly anticipating is almost upon us – the dreaded results day. You may have many questions: When is it? What happens if I don’t get the grades I want? What’s next?

We answer all that and more in our guide to A-level, BTec and T-level results day.

When is it?

Young person and family happy looking at exam resultsAS and A-level results will be released on the 17th of August in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

BTec Level 3s and T-level results will be released, if they haven’t been so already, on the 17th of August as well.

For those in Scotland, SQA results have already been released on the 8th of August. Reports have shown that pass rates are down from last year.

What to do if you don’t get the grades you need

Firstly, let us say that it isn’t the end of the road for your ambitions and there are plenty of other ways to get you where you want to be.

If you’ve narrowly missed out on the entry grades required, the admissions team from your selected university may accept you anyway. Alternatively, the university may provide you with different course options that suit your achieved grades.

Your school or college may provide you with the possibility to resit some or all of your exams; however, this is solely dependent on the discretion of your institution.

There is also nothing forcing you to continue into further education, there’s always the option to take a gap year to fully decide on your next step.

This could involve stepping straight into an entry-level job to start earning or possibly exploring the option of starting a higher-level apprenticeship to develop the skills required to access the career path you desire.

Not happy with your results?

For those studying in England, Wales and Northern Ireland, your institution will contact the exam boards on your behalf and request for your marks to be reviewed.

Once this is complete and you still feel that the grade you’ve received is unfair, this can be escalated further via an appeal.

This is then in the hands of the exam board to consider whether your grade should be corrected. If you still remain unsatisfied with the outcome, you can personally request a review from an independent regulator known as Ofqual.

For students in Scotland, you can appeal directly to the SQA for free – should you want to do this, you are advised to tell your institution of your intention first. If the appeal is accepted, the exam board will review the initial marks received.

How does clearing work?

UCAS‘s clearing process is another way in which you can secure your place at university. It’s essentially the process of matching you with universities that still have places available. Clearing closes in October.

It was recorded last year that almost 67,000 students secured a place at university through the clearing process.

Whether you failed to achieve the grades required for a conditional offer, failed to receive any offers that you desired, decided to apply for university after the 30th of June or even if you achieved better grades than expected and wanted to change universities, the clearing process is available to you.
