Clearing - What is it?
There’s a common misconception that if you don’t get the required grades for your university place or perhaps you’ve missed the deadline, it’s the end of the road. This couldn’t be any further from the truth – let us introduce clearing.
UCAS reported that over 10,400 people had been admitted through clearing the day after A-level results were released. Here’s how you can join them.
What is Clearing?
Clearing allows you to apply for university places which haven’t yet been filled, outside of the application window.
Clearing is open from the 5th of July to the 17th of October 2023.
You can apply for a course through clearing if you’re not already holding an offer from another university, and the course still has places.
You can use clearing if:
- you missed the application deadline (30th June)
- you didn’t meet the entry requirements of your offers
- you didn’t receive any offers or any that you wanted to accept
- you’ve done better than expected and would like to change to a different university or course
- you’ve changed your mind about the course you want to do
How does it work?
If your exam results don’t meet the requirements of a conditional offer you’ve accepted and the university decides to not confirm your place, you’ll automatically be entered into clearing on results day.
Clearing can be done via UCAS, simply log in or register to access the listings of available courses. Almost every university offers courses through clearing so there should be a large selection to choose from.
You should contact the university directly to see if they will accept you for the course you’re interested in before progressing any further.
Once you’ve received confirmation from the university, you need to add your clearing choice to your UCAS application so that they can officially accept you.
