ONS Construction Output: August 2023
This Construction Output provides an overview of the latest statistics released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS). The data used in this report is based on short-term measures of output by the construction industry in June 2023 and contracts awarded for new construction work in Great Britain.
Monthly Construction Output in June 2023: Monthly construction output rose by 1.6% in volume terms in June 2023, driven by increases in both new work (2.0%) and repair and maintenance (1.1%).
Sector-Level Breakdown: Six out of nine sectors experienced growth in June 2023. The key contributors were infrastructure new work (4.7%) and non-housing repair and maintenance (3.4%).
Quarterly Construction Output in Q2 2023: Quarterly construction output increased by 0.3% in Q2 2023 compared to Q1 2023. The rise was attributed to June 2023, with repair and maintenance growing by 0.9%, while new work decreased by 0.1%.
Total Construction New Orders in Q2 2023: Total construction new orders dropped by 7.1% (£786 million) in Q2 2023 compared to Q1 2023. The decline was primarily influenced by significant falls in public other new orders (32.9%) and infrastructure new orders (26.5%).
Annual Construction Output Price Growth: The annual rate of construction output price growth stood at 4.6% in the 12 months leading up to June 2023. This represents a slowdown from the previous year’s record growth rate in May 2022 (10.4%).
In summary, June 2023 saw a rise of 1.6% monthly, driven by growth in new work (2.0%) and repair and maintenance (1.1%). Six sectors recorded gains, led by infrastructure new work (4.7%) and non-housing repair (3.4%). Quarterly output increased by 0.3%, while new orders fell 7.1% in Q2 2023.
