ONS Production Output Report: December 2025
This summary is based on information from the Office for National Statistics’ Index of Production, UK: October 2025, highlighting recent trends in the UK’s production industries, including manufacturing, mining and quarrying, energy supply, and water and waste management.
Monthly Performance Analysis
In October 2025, the UK’s monthly production output was estimated to have increased by 1.1%, following a fall in September 2025 (2%) and a rise in August 2025 (0.3%).
The rise in monthly output resulted from widespread strength across the four main sectors, with rises in “manufacturing” (0.5%), ‘electricity and gas’ (2.1%), “mining and quarrying” (4.3%), and “water supply and sewerage” (1.5%).
6 of the 13 manufacturing subsectors saw a monthly increase in October 2025. The largest contributions came from “manufacture of transport equipment (3.6%), caused by growth from ‘manufacture of motor vehicles’ (9.5%). This was further supported by ‘manufacture of machinery’ and ‘other manufacturing and repair’, which were up by 4.4% and 2.8% respectively.
Three-monthly Trends
During the three months to October 2025, production output was estimated to have fallen by 0.5%, compared to the three months to July 2025. This marked the sixth consecutive fall in three-month-on-three-month growth.
The largest negative contribution to the three-month decrease came from ‘manufacturing’ (0.7%), supported by “mining and quarrying” (1.9%). This was partially offset by increases in ‘electricity and gas’, and ‘water supply and sewerage’, which were 0.3% and 1.2% respectively.
During the three months to October 2025, 6 of the 13 subsectors in manufacturing fell. This fall mainly came from ‘transport equipment’ (8.7%).
UK production output rose by 1.1% in October 2025, rebounding from September’s 2.0% fall, with growth across all major sectors. Manufacturing increased by 0.5%, supported by a strong recovery in motor vehicle production.
Despite the monthly rebound, output fell by 0.5% in the three months to October, marking a sixth consecutive quarterly decline, driven mainly by weakness in manufacturing and transport equipment.
