ONS Construction Output Report Summary - July 2025
The latest Office for National Statistics (ONS) Construction Output Report explores the short-term measures of output by the construction industry in May 2025. This article provides a summary of the key findings identified regarding the performance trends and sectoral challenges shaping the construction industry.
Monthly Performance Analysis
In May 2o25, UK construction output showed a 0.6% decrease, follwoing three consecutive periods of growth. This included an increase of 0.8% in April 2025. This decrease can be attributed to one key area, as repair and maintenance fell by 2.1%, whereas new work increased by 0.6%.
A closer look at the sectoral level reveals that five of the nine construction sectors grew during this period. The sectors contributing most to this fall were non-housing repair and maintenance (2.4%) and private housing repair and maintenance (1.8%).
Three-month Trends
In the three months to May 2025, total construction output was estimated to have grown by 1.2%. New work rose by 0.9%, and repair and maintenance grew by 1.5%.
Despite a slight setback in May 2025, with overall construction output declining by 0.6% due to a notable 2.1% fall in repair and maintenance work, the sector continues to show signs of resilience. Encouragingly, new work increased by 0.6% in the same month, and the three-month trend to May 2025 shows a 1.2% rise in total construction output, driven by a 0.9% increase in new work and a 1.5% boost in repair and maintenance. While sectoral challenges persist, particularly in repair and maintenance, the continued growth across five of the nine construction sectors and positive three-month figures indicate a cautiously optimistic outlook for the industry moving forward.
