ONS Production Output Report: June 2025
This summary is based on information from the Office for National Statistics’ Index of Production, UK: April 2025, highlighting recent trends in the UK’s production industries, including manufacturing, mining and quarrying, energy supply, and water and waste management.
Monthly Performance Analysis
In April 2025, the UK’s monthly production output was estimated to have decreased by 0.6%, following a fall in March 2025 (0.7%) and a rise in February 2025 (1.7%).
The fall in monthly output resulted from decreases in “manufacturing” (0.9%), and “electricity and gas” (4.3%). However, these were partially offset by an increase in “mining and quarrying” (3.6%), and “water supply and sewage” (0.7%).
8 of the 13 manufacturing subsectors saw a fall in April 2025. The largest contributor came from “transport equipment” (5.2%), which is a fall back following its 5.0% increase in March 2025.
Three-monthly Trends
In the three months to April 2025, production output was estimated to have risen by 1.1%, compared against the three months to January 2025.
The main contributor to this increase was “manufacturing”, which rose by 1.2%. This was supported by smaller contributions in “water supply and sewerage” and “electricity and gas”, which were up by 3.7% and 1.0% respectively. However, this was partially offset by a 1.3% decrease in “mining and quarrying”.
In the three months to April 2025, manufacturing output saw rises in 11 of its 13 subsectors. The largest positive contributions came from “transport equipment”, “machinery and equipment not elsewhere classified” and “textiles, wearing apparel and leather products”, which rose by 3.6%, 3.2%, and 5.5% respectively.
In summary, despite a 0.6% decline in monthly production output in April 2025, driven by falls in manufacturing and electricity and gas, recent data suggests a broader upward trend in the UK’s production industries. In the three months to April 2025, total production output rose by 1.1%, led by a 1.2% increase in manufacturing. Notable gains were seen in transport equipment, machinery and equipment, and textiles. Water supply and sewerage also performed strongly, rising by 3.7%.
